Sunshine day.

P1040406It’s been one of those days where it’s been great to be alive.
The sun is shining and the world looks better. Been chatting with friends and they say the same ‘how come everyone gets on better when the sun shines?’

I just feel more alive and energised as soon as I open my eyes and can see the sunshine peeping around my curtain edges. It’s like a liquid energy has infused my blood, strengthened my bones and taken away all the aches and pains. As your skin gets fresh air it seems more moisturised and toned. There is a spring in my step and I want to walk out into the fresh air and enjoy breathing, well it is a precious gift to be here and to breathe.

Towards the end of last summer, when I should have been infused with the glow of the sun, it was a different story. I somehow knew that the sun was vital to my well being and I’d managed a sunshine break every month from February to July. I missed August and by September I was so ill that I had to stop work. It was as though a sledge hammer had been taken to my health and knocked all the strength and life out of me. I could not concentrate, my vision was poor, I hated noise, every bit of me ached. It was that painful that I couldn’t even hold my head up, I had to cradle it in my hands for support. The stuffing was knocked out of me as I could barely breathe, my lungs felt restricted as I felt my spine fall into the middle of my body. Actually I could put a fist into the space where my spine should have been at bra stap level, so something was wrong and my body was crying out for help.

I went to the Doctors and tried to get him to understand how I was feeling. I even said, ‘but I feel OK when I’m on holiday!’. The reply, you can guess was ‘well don’t we all’.
I suppose he had a point in that for most of us a holiday is all about resting and relaxing, being away from the normal daily routine. If you are lucky you are in fresh air, away from pollutants. You may even be eating more fresh food and fruit and less processed stuff. Of course if it’s hot – you may be drinking more water, sorry beers don’t count towards what your body needs. So when you are on holiday you are actually starting to nuture your body with better food and more water. You are exercising more as you swim and walk around and you are relaxing and allowing the body’s internal syatems a chance to have a breather. Then you relax your mind and focus on the now instead of the hundreds of thoughts you have about what you have done and what you have to do.

I suppose that after all that, I can agree with the Dr, but I knew it was more than that and that is what lead me to Vitamin D.
